Optical Position Sensing

Using optical sensors to measure position, distance, and movement

In Radiometry and Photometry, optical sensors are used to quantify the power of a light source. In Optical Position Sensing, similar devices are used to determine the location of a light source in space. Such devices can be used to make non-contact measurements of:

  ANGLE STRAIGHTNESS FLATNESS
  HEIGHT CENTERING DISPLACEMENT
  DISTANCE MOVEMENT VIBRATION

Optical engineers rely on optical position sensors to align lasers, light sources, and mirrors to within fractions of a micron. Medical researchers use such sensors to track human eye movement, and to perform 3-D modeling of human motion. This technology is incorporated into ultra-fast, accurate auto focusing systems for cameras and microscopes. Industrial applications include machine tool alignment and vibration analysis. UDT Instruments has incorporated this technology into a line of specialized optical instrumentation, and has worked with customers to develop position-sensing solutions for a wide range of applications in science and industry.

UDT Instruments’ line of optical position sensing instrumentation includes:
